    C1 Washer Pump Assembly Restoration

I don't know who invented this, but whoever it was.......he or she was a genius!

I bought a repair kit and tore into it yesterday. Just about done.

Just remember that in order for it to work properly, everything has to be connected. The back pressure from the wiper nozzles is what make the pump create vacuum to energize the coordinator to turn on wipers. Been there, done that..

Eric, Don't follow me .....I'm lost too.

Ray, Thanks for that info. When I test it I will hook up the entire system, but the car is gone so I'll have to use a Mytivac, vac tank(I have a old used part from my '62 project), and a makeshift coordinator. I will use distilled water for the squirty action.

Barry, I got it at Ecklers when I was in the area a while ago, but Paragon has it too. Maybe others too.

Ecklers Part# 27-04 There description on the label is 56-58 but it's a typo.

Re: C1 Washer Pump Assembly Restoration

I'm nearing the end of this rebuild and I've hit a wall. A few years ago when I got this used assembly from a "Lady Corvette Parts Seller in California"...., I took it apart. I took photos, but when I released the large ring holding the 2 lower halves together, the stainless steel triangular base "stool" for the big long spring fell out. I tried then to figure out how the stool fits in there, gave up and decided I'd figure it out later. The upper pump housing has 4 raised ribs inside. The stool has 3 legs. When I place the stool in the housing, 3 legs won't sit into a 4 rib hole. The spring fits in the cup of the stool, so it has to go in "legs" down.

Any ideas? I've scoured the web looking for rebuild diagrams and I can't find a thing.

These are the photos when I got it and opened it up. Then it sat for a few years. But it didn't fix itself like I had hoped.

Yesterday's photos. I'm still lost. How can a 3 legged stool fit on a 4 ribbed floor????

With the loss of Tom Maxwell the number of people that professionally repair these can be counted on one thumb of one hand....
I called TriCo a few years ago and they are still in business but laughed when I asked about any old documentation about these pumps...the only thing I can find are an old doc on testing them and some drawings I collaborated with a CF member to develop...

Our cars have TriCo's Nu-Matic Hydrostatic Pumps (what a pretentious name)...

Its been more than a few years but I snagged this article off either a Chrysler or Cadillac web site. To wit, yes, I believe this system (in one guise or another) was used on other GM cars...

Re: C1 Washer Pump Assembly Restoration

I purchased a rebuild kit 10 years ago and actually succeeded in putting the entire pump system back together and 2 squirts of water was what I got for my effort. I sent my pump to Tom Maxwell and he told me that there were two gaskets missing in the kits that were available at the time and my pump would not work due to the missing gaskets. I don't know if the kits have been improved and all gaskets are now included or not.

A side note - I sent my pump to Tom and after 3 attempts to make it work, he called me and said that he had never run across a pump that he could not fix, but mine was the first. He sold me a NOS pump. As long as I keep the reservoir full and operate the system every 60 days or so, it works and has for around 10 years. If the water level is down a couple of inches, my system will not work.

Re: C1 Washer Pump Assembly Restoration

I tried one of those rebuild kits about 5 years back and same result, not everything was there and trying to buck the rivets to the little plastic pump halves while holding things together was near impossible - Tom wound up rebuilding the pump for me...

Tom's washer advice (to me on the phone) was:

                            1) ONLY use distilled water in the reservoir (no washer fluid)
                            2) Keep the reservoir at least 2/3 full
                            3) Run the pump at least once a month
                            4) Press the wash button for 3 seconds; and allow 15 seconds between repeated presses of the wash button

You have parts from two different type of pumps that are not compatible.
