Frank, you just may want to test the oil pressure with a gauge first, this will lead you in the path of which way to go, gauge or pump. I am thinking that 73's are still a mechanical gauge still not electrical??

From your description it is impossible to tell weather it is a gauge problem or an engine problem. Install a temporary mechanical gauge and report back.

        Ed,
Yes, you are correct, the 73 oil pressure gauge is still mechanical.

Frank, I Believe by 77 the oil gauge is electrical Most of the time with these style Gauges the oil sending unit goes, But it really best to still Do a mechanical gauge test. If you don't have one, The oil sender is a 25-30 dollar part might be worth a try.
