    Odometer Replacement 1964

    Folks,
Returning from the Syracuse Nationals last summer I noticed that the odometer on my '64 Coupe had finally bit the dust.
It's about the only part of the car that I haven't worked on yet.
I (think I) know what I need to do physically. My question is more about the legality.
One great thing about the car was its relative low mileage.
I'd like to do this strictly according to Hoyle.
Is there a standard procedure for replacing this device so that I comply with all New York State laws and regulations??
If anything I'd like to have the new odo reading be exactly what the old one had on it when it expired.

Jack I had a fellow from Fla. Named Bill Harrison repair my 63 odometer and return it with the same mileage. Also I think that Joe Ray does repairs.

          Jack,

The basic price for a speedometer rebuild is $185.00. That's using your trip and odo and your pointer. If those are bad you would be billed for those.
For the basic you will get everything new behind the face and calibration with a one year warranty.

O.K,...front seat out, steering wheel & horn apparatus removed.
All clamps, bolts retaining the steering shaft removed, wiring disconnected.
Now the shaft will pull out of the rag joint easily, up until about the last half inch.
Then it bangs to a halt. I lube it. No luck.
Should it just pull right out, or do I need to spread the end of the rag joint?
Or, am I missing something else??

Jack, the shaft may just be stuck, If possible just leave the column in place It should drop downward a few inches and that should be enough to remove the cluster.

Jack its okay to spread the rag joint with a wide flat blade screw driver there must be some rust on the splines of the shaft, You do have the clamp removed on outside firewall ?( This wraps around the outside of column housing)

                      Ed, yes, all clamps removed.
Shaft moves easily, up to that last about half inch. Then it bangs to a stop.
I soaked it with PB Blaster. Will try again in the AM.
                      I love a challenge!

And why are you pulling the shaft/column ? As Ed mentioned just let it drop a little.

                          Ed,
I had an epiphany last night, while consuming a good IPA.
I had loosened the rag joint upper bolt, but not removed it.
I remembered noticing in a diagram that the shaft was cut away on one side.
Now the issue made sense. The shaft wasn't clearing the bolt.
                          Bolt removed. Steering shaft out.
Now, on to the dash pod!

                          Alan,
Only because it gives me more room to work.
Plus, the shaft is in need of a good cleaning.

Ever since I've owned this vehicle (almost 30 years now) the gas gauge has been an issue. It typically reads either full or 3/4. Since you can actually see how much fuel is in the tank I never worried about it much. The research I did suggested that the tank sender unit was likely the culprit. And, since I have no access to a lift I was reluctant to tackle it.
But, now that I'll have the gauges out, is there a way to test the gas gauge to see if that is the problem?

Got off my gluteus and did some basic research.
                              Issue resolved.
Project going better/much easier than anticipated.
Again, thanks to all for the suggestions.
