    Re: 55 engine stamping question

And then I remembered that I used to have an early 56 Flint 265 engine block ... and here is the engine stamp.

Yes, the R was added after the fact, but note that the sequence numbers are individually stamped

      Re: 55 engine stamping question

The #2 1955 corvette was sold at kissimmee mecum auction January of last year. No owner record at Proteam.
The engine pad was a 009163F55FG with elevated first two 0s. This pad if we could get a clear picture would
help with my pad approval Thanks

Ed, when you say early may I ask what the casting date was?

Also when you say the R was added after the fact, do you mean long after the engine build and stamp and use with only the G suffix?

The first 5 characters of this '56 appear to me to have been in a holder.

The date code for this engine was mid October, 1955 (I think it was the 17th).

I bought the 56 Chevy this engine was in. The engine suffix at that time was F56G. I added the R after the machine shop confirmed the engine wasn't cracked.

Date is way too early for a Corvette engine, what I wanted to do was play around with adding the R.

I agree, a gang holder was used in this example for the first 5 digits of the sequence number.

Going back to this engine, it might "appear" that the first five digits are in a gang holder, but look closer.

The digit 2 following the second zero is cocked slightly to the right. The spacing between the top of the 2 and the zero is not the same as the spacing between the bottom of the 2 and the zero (it was easier to see on the actual engine).

The 7 following the 2 is stamped higher that the other first 5 digits.

The 9 following the 7 is spaced more toward the right than would be normal in a gang holder.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that the first five digits were stamped by one person at the same time, and the last 2 digits were stamped later (and perhaps by a different person).

The #2 1955 corvette was sold at Mecum Florida auction last January, no owner known by PROTEAM.
The engine pad stamp has elevated first two 0s (0091603F55FG). Finding the owner and obtaining a
clear stamp pad pic would really support my cause. thanks Lynn
