    Exhaust Manifold bolt finish

I will be refinishing my 1967 small block exhaust manifolds this winter. I put new bolts on about two years ago and they have rusted already.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what finish I should try for so that these bolts do not rust.

    Thanks!

The bolts were phosphate-finished. In the exhaust manifold application they will rust rapidly, just as you've found. While I have not done this, I expect that a very high temperature satin clear might be the best bet to prevent this from occurring while maintaining close to original appearance.

VHT has a 1200 degree satin clear paint. Once properly torqued, you can spray some clear on a piece of shiny cardboard and use a brush to touch up.

Jerry, the exhaust manifolds and bolts, French locks where painted engine orange on your 63, as these parts where on the engine during the painting process.
