Who sells the best and most complete Muncie 4- speed rebuild kit?

    Thanks Bob

    Re: Muncie rebuild kit

There are several sources for rebuild kits and they are probably all relatively complete. I would recommend getting the best quality bearings available as sources have changed over time.

I bought my Muncie rebuild kit back in 2010 from D&L Transmission, Hunt Station, NY. Larry was great to work with and responded quickly when I found I needed additional gears. I've got six years worth of driving on mine since the rebuild without a problem and no leaks.

      Michael and Bob------

I highly recommend Larry Fischer at D&L Transmissions for transmission parts.

          Re: Muncie rebuild kit

Did anyone who rebuilt a Muncie have case wear at the thrust ends of the counter shaft gear set? The tranny in my 63 July build is getting a little whiney in 1st, 2nd and 3rd so I assume that's the problem as I run a tall 3:36 rear. Back in the day, my friends would weld up the thrust washers even in the T10 cast iron cases from long wind outs (they welded themselves to the case over time). I have about 47k on mine now without ever a tear down or removal (same with the clutch).

            Stu,

The fix for the Muncie countershaft is to machine and sleeve the case. Most machine shops and some of the larger transmission shops perform that service. Or just change out the case if you can find one.

I've yet to own a BW or Muncie that did not leak there. Even with a sleeve, I believe it still would leak. Most guys just put some sealer on the end of the shaft and let the bell housing cover it.

Would that be the case no matter which gear lube you used? Back in the early 90's when I was recovering from open heart, I had a local Corvette full service dealer do some maintenance on my 63 and he changed the tranny gear lube using the new (at the time) spec light weight lube. My transmission began leaking in a number of places. Because of that, I soon as I was able, I checked the level and found it low and I sucked some out and noticed it was of a light weight viscosity so I drew most of it out and replaced it with 80/90 wt. gear lube (?). That seemed to improve it, but it still showed seepage at the bell housing and drips into my catch pan. It is probably, as you say, from the counter shaft end.

Leaks can also occur due to worn threads in the bolt holes for the bearing retainer. Sealer should always be applied to these bolts.

                      Stu,
you can check the countershaft end play by taking the side cover off and moving the shaft with a dial indicator on one of the gears. It's clumsy but you can do it. Too much play and you can spin the thrust washer messing up the boss. Check the shop manual. You don't have many miles on that tranny so I think you'll find it's ok. If it clunks in reverse it's trouble (I know.)

No trouble in reverse. It just sounds like it has straight tooth gears when I run low speed in 1st or 2nd through my village. What was they called that box? What ever it was, mine ain't one of those.

                        Thanks for the info though.

                            Stu,

I think you're referring to the M22 "rock crusher" transmission.
