Exhaust manifold coating - done judging and don't like rust - suggestions?

Ok guys, my car is done with the judging circuit and now I'm driving my car and enjoying it. I also like bringing it to a few local car shows here and there.

I used a brush on Eastwood coating on the manifolds for judging that got close to the correct color to minimize my deduction.

Now, the rust is starting to poke through that finish.

I am interested in taking the manifolds off the car and permanently fixing this. What have you guys used and had good LONG TERM success with. If the color is off a bit, not a huge deal, I would rather not see the rust.

My recommendation: send them to Jerry MacNeish for his coating followed by the application of VHT high temperature cast blast. You'll never see a spot of rust again and manifolds will always appear as-new.

Does he do both coatings? Or do I have to do the VHT part?

      Contact info for him? Cost?

The POR15 exhaust paint works rather well

          Chris,

Jerry does the aluminum coating and supplies the cast blast paint, which you apply. Google Jerry MacNeish, he is not hard to find. I think his web site is z28camaro or something like that. I believe there is a page on there that details the process. I don't remember the cost.

I used 1200* cast blast paint on my manifolds....over 10 years ago and still no rust. I guess you could say that it is permanent.

Start with freshly sand blasted manifolds.

              POR 15 Exhaust Gray...
I had a professional restoration expert use the VHT treatment on my exhausts and they turned a ludicrous bling gold (see picture) -- avoid it like the plague.... No, the picture was not photoshopped - that's the actual gold color.

And before you ask the raw manifolds were prepped and the VHT paint was cured per instructions...
Contacted VHT and their only comment was to offer more of their crappy paint... Apparently this result is pretty common...

Recoated with POR 15 Exhaust Gray after scrubbing manifolds prodigiously with lacquer thinner - they look great now.

There was an article in "The Restorer" several years ago. Look it up and you will find a project you can do yourself and it will be permanent.

10 year old 1200* cast blast. Got it from LIC. I believe LIC got it from SEYMOUR paints. Here is a photo...no gold here...don't know what happened with the VHT used by Frank....

John Hinckley has many times posted photos here of the exhaust manifolds on his 1969 Camaro Z-28 which received the Jerry MacNeish/VHT treatment many years ago. They still appear like new.

That's what I have used for several decades with the same results. Bead blast the manifolds and paint them with high heat cast blast. Never used VHT and after Franks photo's, I never will.

I am going to step out and suggest JetHot Coating. This is a ceramic coating that will last forever. No it will not look original but it looks great.

I used VHT hi temp paint for years and never had a problem, until recently. It turns gold after several heat cycles. They've changed their recipe somehow and won't admit it's a problem. Many years ago I used the Seymour product and lasted a long time. Always had the manifolds media blasted for best results.

I am now using the POR 15 products. Frank converted me over after seeing his "gold" results. POR15 is excellent. Highly recommend. You can buy the small can and lightly thin with acetone to spray it on. I use a Preval sprayer. It goes on dark but lightens when curing.

After a heat cycle it lightens the appearance even more as seen below after engine break-in.

I agree with Mike that's what I've used and no rust.
