63 Fan Clutch Question

63 Fan Clutch Question

The fan clutch on my 63 327/340 has markings on the mounting flange that might indicate it is incorrect. Amoung other markings appear 271 68, and 5329100. I beleive a correct clutch would not be dated for 63's. This one has an exposed coil and is stamped with a Delco brand. If it's not correct for 63 there's no point in having it restored.

It is not correct for a 1963 car. It is a later service replacement. It still may have some value to someone with a C3 car.

One of the few pieces I still have left from my November 62 car is the clutch fan. It doesn't have the exposed spring like Harry posted so I suspect that there may be variations depending on when the car was produced. I think early cars may have gotten Eaton units?

Both Eaton and Schwitzer fan clutches were used in production. The Eaton is still available as a service replacement. K&B recently started reproducing the Schweitzer design. It is a very nice unit, although it does not have all the original numbers and logos.

OP's best bet for a good original is to contact the 2-3 current rebuilders and see if they have a completed and date correct unit for sale. Otherwise buy a correct core and have it rebuilt.

I used a repro Schwitzer for the regional judging of my '63 250hp car. It is indeed a nice repro and did well and works well too.
In retrospect I might have put some clear coat over the stenciling on the front of the fan as that text faded quite quickly to almost invisibility, but I didn't know if doing that would affect its operation...

GM # 5329100 appears in the 1968, 1969, and 19780 Corvette assembly manual as an optional fan clutch. The "271 68" stamping is a date code (271st day of 1971). I do not have a 1972 Corvette AIM.

Here is a photo of a Eaton fan clutch ink stamped "E11F" and is dated May 11, 1965.

Harry's fan clutch ink stamped "C8D" is dated March 8, 1963.

Thanks for all the comments and clarifications. I ended up getting a correct core from David Sokolowski and will have it rebuilt by pamperedcorvettes.
