I suspect Richard plans to silk screen them, like he does with air cleaner lids. That' give the lettering a raised texture.

Gary, I believe originals are embossed (or "recessed") slightly from the surrounding surface. This is one sure way to know if the plate is original or not as you can feel it as you run your finger tips over the shift pattern. Richard uses a wire EDM machine to do this.

Reproduction pieces are printed on top the plate and are slightly raised from the surface.

Hi Kurt, you are correct with your description... I have collected many shift patterns during my restoration ... My final decision was to use an original piece after I gave it a light buffing. It's not perfect but looks the est in my opinion .. Good luck with yours
