The AIM is the assembly instruction manual for each model year. In #13 above you reference

The corvette assembly manual lists the frame number as 14020218 which is not what is on my frame

so where did this come from? My assumption...the AIM!

MJ represents and refers to the Michael Johnson post above.

        Michael,
I have one more question....when you respond to the frame suffix question, could you tell me if you still have the engine suffix code label on the rear of the passenger side valve cover....if yes, what is the format (size, colors, letter/number arrangement, etc.)....mine should be 81ZDD or some other number and arrangement of these digits. Thanks, Fred S.

Finally back. The suffix is 301, and I see no stickers/label (or any evidence they were ever there) on the back passenger side valve cover on mine.

I have my build sheet too, there is a job sequence # (upper left corner) which is not the VIN, below that is the sched. no. and date, which is 17 and the last 4 of the VIN and 07-30, but it was actually built August 3, and for frame it only says 144.

              In summary:

              6-13-81 - Frame assembly date
07-30 Expected date of production (buildsheet)
              08-03 Trim tag date code

I think I need to amend that actual build finish date after looking a bit more closely, I think it was probably either July 31 or August 1. It was pulled off the line for a minor paint repair/touchup it appears. The trim tag body date is 5th week of July.

                      Re: C3 1981 Frame Stencil

So after this response I decided to continue my research in trying to verify the frame number, dash number and date. In looking back thru the literature binder that I received from the previous owner, I found the attached Report from AO Smith. It appears to have been tri folded and then rolled up and I assume was stuck in some obscure location in the vette. It shows p/n 14041144, dash #304 and a 7/21/81 date. It also indicates that there were 168 frames on this load from AO Smith to GMAD. This info corresponds closely to your data. Further I think that it was used on the assembly line by the worker to establish the stencil that was used and then it was stashed in the vette some place.....what do you think or Tom Russo if he reads this? If photo is not attached let me know....having some problems.

This is very cool and something I have not seen before so quite a nice piece of factory documentation. As you conclude the assembly number for your frame should be the 14041144-304. So 304 becomes the lot number. How nice is that? Frame stencil not attached.

Remember now that the frame stencil would have been applied at A.O Smith rather than the BG plant.

Wait a day or two but I would really like to see a broader audience take a look at this document and get some opinions. Let's start a new discussion thread. Title it "A.O. Smith 1981 frame assembly document. Anyone see one like this before?

Yeah...some of the early C3 guys would be familiar, or so I think, with this sort of documentation. Put "A.O Smith" in the title and its like flys on s__t so to speak! LOL
