1963 Ashtray - Above VIN 17500

Quick Survey.

If you believe you have the original ashtray to your 63 and you VIN is above 17500 please let me know if you have the single tang on the side (1" x 3/4") or the U shaped tang. This is the metal clip that holds the ashtray in place when installed.

I'm trying to determine the approximate VIN when the ashtray changed, just another 63 anomaly.

Keith, My vin(10674) is a couple hundred from yours and I have a solid tang.

Harry, I noted that in the 63 JM there's a service bulletin pertaining to the 63 Ash tray dated late April. so maybe there was a change made sometime after this, I also noted that my 63 ash tray has a modification as per bulletin. According to bulletin they filed one edge of for easy removal.

Harry - don't have my #19367 Z06 anymore, but the original ash tray was a "U-shape" tang

Hi Harry, for your search........my '63 #20655 has the U shaped tang. I'm anxiously awaiting publication of your book of "Meditations on the '63 Corvette". I'm sure it will be more than one volume.

Harry, might not be a bad Idea, so many changes in the 63 corvette it almost warrants a book.

15192 & 19749 both have the "U" shaped tang.

This is a great thread. I'm not trying to be a "Buzz Kill" here, just trying to help Harry with his research. I have car 9301, original interior, dismantled in 1975 and it had the solid 3/4" tang. Can all of you comment on the chain of custody of your car and whether it still has the original interior. There may be a chance to find out when and if the solid tang ashtray changed to the U shaped tang. Most of you that have commented have cars above 15,000. Perhaps Harry should have asked for comments from people with earlier cars. I see most of you have the U shaped tang.
