1964 Help me solve this air cleaner fit issue

Tried on another site but I need help here.
My 64 has its original engine and intake, and I have found a correct Carter Carb for it. I picked up the air cleaner used, was supposed to be for a 64. The crankcase vent tube is from LI Corvette. I have since noticed a different tube available from Paragon. The problem is that the tube from the block hits the tube from the air cleaner and does not allow the air cleaner to sit down on the carb. I would like to confirm the air cleaner is correct, and the carb is spaced properly before I go back to LIC and ask for a return. Any other ideas?

Greg, do you have a gasket on the air horn on top of carburetor it uses a thick gasket? That might give you a little more room if its missing. what about the plastic spacer plate or gaskets I wonder if there maybe some thickness issues there, sometimes the after market suppliers spec.s maybe a little thinner, I find that Doc Rebuild has some pretty nice carb.gaskets, I myself brought from him as the aftermarkets were not configured correctly.

      Thanks Ed,
I do have an air cleaner gasket for up top. It's not on at the moment but is not enough to make a difference. I was wondering about the spacer as well. But on the other site just now I got some pics of another car and the tube from LIC is just not looking right.

The configuration of the tube, originally GM #3846110, looks generally correct to me.

I don't know if the carb spacer is correct, or not. However, certainly no thicker spacer was used.

          Greg,
My 65 looks like the same parts. I don't think the parts are any different. But I do notice where the vent tube is welded to the "L" bracket mine fits up tighter. Yours looks pulled away on the bottom where the bracket starts to curve. Does the base of the tube sit squarely and flat on the engine block? Mine has about 3/8" visually between the two tubes where the hose goes. Your stud looks correct with the narrow hex.

            Gene,

I found this photo on the Corvette Central website stating that it was a "certified used" original 64-65 Corvette w/250/300 HP crankcase vent tube. It looks shorter than your LIC reproduction vent tube on the air cleaner end and it appears that it would properly fit your 1964. IMO, used original is always better than reproduction.

              Gene,

The base of the tube is sitting flat. I actually purchased this tube to replace one I got with the air cleaner which turned out to be for the 365 HP aluminum intake manifold. That one interfered with the cast iron intake on my engine and would not sit flush to the block. I definitely would have preferred to buy the certified used one pictured below. I'm sending pics to LIC for assistance on their end.

Does anything look wrong with my air cleaner housing???

                Dave,

Thank you for pointing this out. I did not know this supplier offered used parts. I wish I had known earlier, but I still have a way to go and will check this site daily. Very helpful!

Greg, this one looks like the original on my 64 as well. The one pictured in in your first post looks too tall to allow for use with the connecting hose, and does not look right for a base motor Carter configuration. Dan

This looks more like mine too the bracket welded to the tube is tighter, My guess the height is about 3/8" shorter than the replacement. Also it has a rib to locate the rubber hose.

I didn't take notice of it earlier but the original is projection welded while the replacement has a tack weld. Not a good thing for judging.

I have a original piece on my '65 250 hp and the brkt on the vent tube lies flatter against the intake and then curves up and yes projection welded. The brkt almost looks like it first curves down rather than a straight shot to the tube like the repro.

Thank you, John. I have ordered an OEM used vent tube from Corvette Central and will try that. I will post a picture once I am successful.

note to all - LIC does not make this part - Paragon is the manufacturer for all major vendors. I reached out to Paragon and asked them to look at it. They replied that they tested it on their jig and it all looks correct - I do see the issue but don't know of a solution short of bending the bracket, or cutting the end of the tube.

Just wanted to update this thread with my solution. I found a used original tube and compared them side by side. They were considerably different in overall length. LIC was very helpful in taking back the Paragon repro tube.
