    63 Ground Strap Star Washer

Well, I started going through my judging sheets to get ready for this years National. Just fixing the simple things.

I lost a point because I was missing the star washer on the ground strap that attaches to the linkage. There is no star washer called out in the 63 AIM Section U65 that I can see. Can any of you 64 to 67 owners look at your AIMs and see if one is called out.

Maybe I can get a point by doing nothing???

    Thanks

    Hi Harry -

I see lock washers in the 64 AIM only for the chassis and engine ground straps, but NOT for the accelerator linkage.

The 64 AIM, U69 s5.00, shows no L Washer at the accel lever. In fact on that page are four diagrams, three of them show the use of item #1, L Washer pn 121753. Neither does the 63 Shop Manual, 13-11 show a L Washer. Think this is just a small error that never gets cured. As I recall the ground straps only got a Washer when the surface was painted - to brake through the paint to get a good ground.
What does the JG expect, may be easier to add than fight, (look who's talking)

My '65 AIM only shows a screw (448645) in the drawing at the lower right of the page.

The 63 JG calls for one, external star.

Well Harry, I think this is a trick question...the sixth edition seems to be covering all the bases, i.e. it calls for a washer, but includes an AIM drawing that doesn't show one...

Before settling on no washer for Nationals, I found an original car that was lacking this heavenly body, so I went that way. (see pic) I didn't get a deduct, but it probably could have gone either way. Good luck...

Re: 63 Ground Strap Star Washer

Harry at our last regional seasoned judges found I was missing the star washer@ accel. lever, so I installed one, the star washer was discussed here a few times on 63 and everyone says NO! but the JM says yes, to make them happy its there now. I kind of feel that with it there you may win, as that's what is in the JM.

I can tell you my November 63 car did not have any star washer. I believe I was the first to remove the bolt and the eye lid for the broken missing ground cable was still there.

you can get dinged with it, and get dinged without it. I would make it the way you know is right and let the chips fall. No L washer.
Like Tim above, I was the first to remove broken ground strap remnant from my Jan 64 L84. No L washer, and no sign of one ever having been there.

                    Harry,
You asked for '64-'67 owners to chime in so here's what I read. In the '67 AIM, U69, A3 it calls for L. Washer #138489. The 5th edition TIM&JG on page 123, calls for an external tooth washer between the ground strap and accelerator lever.

Interesting, sound like none of the 63 to 67 AIMs call for a star washer.

Harry, Leif's note says yes on the '67's.

(edit, ooops, yes '67, it says L. Washer but IIRC it is actually a toothed washer.......Yes the pic shows toothed and the part# is a External Toothed 3/8" diameterlock washer.)

But just wondering. The 448645 "SCREW" as called out in the AIM.......I know it doesn't say "SCREW ASSEMBLY", which would typically denote a screw and integrated washer, but I'm wondering if it actually is a "assembly" and the AIM is in error in it's description.

                        Just thinking.....

p.s. one other tidbit....the 2981858 "Strap ASM - GROUND" is a Assembly. Could it have had a LW integrated to it?

                        p.p.s. I'm reaching, i know....

                              Harry,
The AIM does identify the washer as a "L. Washer" but looking at Rich's part number picture it appears the part number listed in the AIM as a L. Washer is actually a external tooth washer...confusing, huh??
