    1971 Wiring Questions

First my car is a 71 LS5 and the wing harness that went to the alternator plug had been cut and new wires spliced in by previous owner, only the last 6 inches. I unwound the tape and cut the splice in piece off and soldered in two new wires to match the color and size of the original ones. In the wiring schematic it shows a brown one and a black with white stripe. It also says that the brown wire is a resistance wire, different schematic for same year says it is a fusible link wire. I checked the resistance and none shows up and did,t see any fusible link. These are the two wires in the white plastic plug on the alternator. If anyone can help would be appreciated.

Also the bolt that holds the metal bracket to the rear of the alternator with wiring harness, need head markings for that. Thanks

    Sheldon

    Re: 1971 Wiring Questions

My 1970 is not visible right now. I do remember the wire from the alternator with a fusible link going to the horn relay. I think the wire is black. The fusible link is very noticeable in the wiring. The wire inside the fusible link will burn into/out if something goes haywire with the alternator.
My alternator went out on a trip once and the rebuilt one I bought on start up pegged the battery gauge and stopped. This action by the rebuilt alternator disabled the wiring in the fusible link to function. This had to be fixed before an alternator would charge the battery.

          Sheldon:
The bolt that holds the metal wiring bracket to the rear side of the alternator on my December 1970 built LS5 car has a single "R" headmark and 3 hashmarks.
          Regards, Jim
