Re: "Knocking Down" door jambs for judging

I guess since I've had two cars that I built Top Flight with shiny door jambs, I've never seen the need to try to deceive the judges. That's where we differ.

If I were trying to deceive the judges you think I'd be posting about what I've done on the NCRS web site ?
I'm going for a factory appearing finish everywhere I can so I'm not sure what your problem is...
I don't think that merits being called deceptive or a cheater.

There were many helpful responses to my original question and I thank those other posters for their input.
      I'm done here...

I am with you Frank. The idea IS to have a factory appearing finish regardless of the method.

Thanks Bill. Apparently you don't get much slack as a first time judging entrant on here seeking advice. That's fine I have lots of friends I can get help from in person.

Frank, I think some are just jealous of what you are doing and how hard you are working to get things correct. I have been down the same path and admire you for what you are doing. Looking forward to meeting you @ Lakeland.

              Frank,
I suppose you have to do some careful masking (roll back technique?). What product will remove these without damaging underlying clear coat?
By the way, as I read it in judging manual, finish only has to "APPEAR factory", so; none of this is cheating.

That's correct- otherwise every effort to restore would be considered cheating.

Yes, I 'soft taped' the car...a simple technique of rolling the tape into a tube along the sharp edges where the jambs meet the glossy exterior paint...same for the hood ledge. Takes some finesse but once you get it right and 'mist' the lacquer on it looks factory and has no sharp tape line. The stuff I used is lacquer so, if I want to remove it lacquer thinner should work if I don't want too long to take it off. The lacquer thinner should not hurt the fully cured modern paint underneath the dulling agent. I know this is the case because I used lacquer thinner to get a few spots of overspray off.

Frankly, its pretty subtle and doesn't bother me - I doubt that I'll mess with removing it.
I don't know what the whole cheating go-round was about....so I'll just let it drop.
My New Year's resolution is to not stress the small stuff.
