Well it took some lacquer but the jambs and hood lip are dumbed down to a reasonable facsimile of unbuffed lacquer.
Still has some sheen to it; I compared those areas to an original lacquer '67 coupe nearby and I'm fairly pleased.

However, if anybody told me two years ago I would be making my gorgeous paint job look like a factory Monday-morning hangover job I'd have said they were crazy...

Actually Duplicolor Clear Gloss Lacquer -- 'misted' on -- ever so lightly.

Another can of worms like the engine pad judging. Highly subjective & the points are in the eye of the beholder. It's the game we play.

What's done at this point is done.

With a week to go before judging the only other thing I might tackle is installing Delco shocks if I receive them in time....other than that the car will have to stand on its own merits...

My car is base coat/clear coated and 8 years ago when I did it, I achieved a dull look in my hood, trunk and door jams by simply NOT putting the clear coat on these areas by reverse taping all the gaps and applying the clear. The base coat has an uncoated appearance very similar to unbuffed lacquer. The surface has held up very well and the rest is history. Whether or not this method would hold up to today's judging standards is unknown.

Satin Clear Acrylic = Krylon K01313
Flat Clear Acrylic = Krylon K03530
                    Dulling Spray = Krylon K01310

                    They all work

                      frank,
So, you decided against he enamel and went with the lacquer? How can you get it off if you want to in the future?

It's pretty subtle actually so I'm OK with it permanently. It could possibly be removed with lacquer thinner at some point. That won't hurt the original paint underneath.

I shot a little around the bottom of the front and rear valences and it really does the job. (No, I'm not lame enough to try to fool
                          judges with hair spray.)...

With a week or so until Lakeland I just can't bring myself to shoot that stuff on the door jambs. I know I'll hate it once the judging is over. So, I wonder how big a hit that is. I've searched on here and heard everything from the full 85 points to 20 points...and everything in between.
Guess I am lame since I used hairspray in 2010, and my 67 L79 Top Flighted in Charlotte. I then washed the hairspray off and had my nice non correct shiny jambs and under hood areas.

I've had 3 judges tell me they can spot that old trick a mile away...if you got away with it good for you.

So you're saying you're a better cheater than the others?

I've tried to emulate factory appearance with lacquer paint; if somebody else did it with hairspray and got away with it my response was "good for you" above.

Why don't we just leave it there...and keep things civil ?
