    Re: 091 Coil

    Tim et al,

So... The issue with the coil shown in your original post is that the 091 embossed at the bottom does not line up with the terminal? I am looking for an 091 coil for a '62 and there is limited documentation and much of it is not clear. Does the 091 line up with the terminal in all of the 091 coils, including the earlier C1s?

      Re: 091 Coil

      Michael,
I have had 2 early 091 coils and 1 late (correct for 63s) 091 coil and they have all had the 091 embossed at the bottom and line up with the terminal. I believe, but could be wrong, this is the only correct configuration.

        Tim,

Thanks! Any idea where I might find an original early 091 coil?

          Mike,
I found a correct 63 (toughest to find) on parts for sale on the other forum a year ago. I sold an early one @ Carlisle last year. Saw an early one @ Indy last year. They are $500 to 600. There was an NOS one on Ebay a while back for $1000. The one good thing, back then they made them to last and all 3 I had functioned fine.
You may want to try Andy Cannizzo in NJ. I am in FL and don't have his contact info with me. If you can't find him, call me @ 513-594-0867 and I will let you know how get his #

Here's an original 091, as has been said above, the '091' aligns with the positive:

I don't know how you test these things, but its shaky, it ran well enough to pass ops and drive into place at a meet...car didn't run well enough to pass PV with it though, had to switch it out...

There is a method to test with an ohms meter that I believe is spelled out in the service manual.

                  Michael,

Mine was the same way, it ran for a short period of time then the motor started acting up. No problems with the NAPA IC-12 or even a NOS 202 as they are still around. Paying big for a used 091 not knowing it's history IMO is likely not going to end well.

I agree, Tim, buying used electrical stuff is, at best, a gamble. Its a nice, expensive paper weight and talking piece...Wish there was some way to fix it.

type used on 63. I see on the top view of coil that there appears to be some surface abrasions on the raised surface of the positive terminal, SE corner. if it has abrasions in that corner it is most likely a repro. It appears strange to me that no one has noticed a common marking on the top of repro coils. the same marking is being used on many different repro coils. some vendors are now filing the marking off.
