    091 Coil

Did all 091 coils have the embossment low on the can. According to the winter 1995 article by Ken Kayser the lower 091 emboss should be in alignment (straight down) from one of the primary terminals as shown on page 18 in the above referenced article. If anyone has any pics of there 091 I would like to see them.

I am looking at one and I suspect it's a reproduction, top does not have the raised bosses which could indicate a pre 1963 part but emboss is low on the can and not in alignment with the primary terminal above.

Opinions on this part are appreciated.

Tim, my 091 coil from my 63 is like the one in the pictures. the 091 is on the lower part of the housing. I understand that the 091 can also be stamped on the top??

      Re: 091 Coil

I have never seen one stamped 091 12V at the top but I have only looked at a few. I have a bad 091 here with the raised boss and 091 at the bottom and it's emboss is in line (straight down) from a primary terminal above.

Does your 63 coil have the raised boss next to the high voltage tower and emboss in line.

tim: the studs of the current repos are non-magnetic. years ago, a copper sleeve with the various deco coil #'s embossed on them were slipped over an original common #'d deco coil. these sleeved coils hence held a magnet like all real deco coils. mike

I have a few early 091's but am looking for a real 1963-091 coil. Anyone have any idea where I might find one? Thanks in advance.

              Jerry,

Can you tell me if the early 091's you own have the embossment up high on the can and is it in line vertically with one of the primary terminals.

Thanks you everyone for there comments. I am trying to determine if the coil I am looking at is a original or reproduction, I can only go by pictures.

Are the copper sleeve 091 embossment cans still available, my NAPA IC-12 may be needing a new jacket for the time being.

Tim, just wondering if My coil served any purpose as I believes it is a original OR maybe Mike M. can comment. I know that during judging you cannot make out the stamping being low and due to the coil bracket. Thanks Ed

the 091 pictured in the 4th post sure looks like a real mccoy( but i never say definite from observing photographs), in that the 091 is embossed low and the wearing away of paint on the lower end doesn't reveal a copper coloration like the sleeved cans of the 1990's did. i can't recall who made the sleeves years ago but i think is was a fellow from so cal, maybe bob connor? i haven't seen any ads for the sleeved cans nor have the cans been as common on the judging fields as they were 10 to 20 years ago. mike

Mike, I thought it was Goat Hill who made the slip-on cans.

Did the slip on coil cover also go over the wide section of the coil or just under it?

the sleeve resembled a beer can with the top removed. the sleeve slipped onto the delco coil from the bottom of the coil and slid up till it got to the end of the coil that crimps over the bakelite tower. they were hard to discern on the judging fields of yesteryear. mike

Tim, My early 091 is embossed on the bottom and is in aligment of the +Positive terminal. The info on originals being embossed on the top of the coil is not typical since I was taught when doing seminars not to say wrong.
The repro coils are embossed on top which is totally incorrect.
When your car is judged you must lossen the clamp and turn the coil as you all know. So that judges can read it.

I have a NOS '091 later coil that is also embossed on the bottom. The slip on can was sold by Paragon and Zip years ago. (I think)

                              Ed,

The 091 coil in your picture is very helpful, thanks for posting the picture for me. I have one exactly like it, lower emboss and directly in line with the + primary terminal but mine is bad.

Thanks everyone else for the information, I had a chance to get a NOS 091 coil but I suspect it's a reproduction based on information here. Reproduction stuff is junk, I would rather find the can and slip it on a good delco coil.

                              More about this later..
