    Stamp Pad Judging... What If?

Lets say you have your C2 Corvette judged. The stamp pad appears to be correct in all judged parameters BUT there is a date of 8-13-70 stamped on the pad along with the letters HD.

    What would the deduction be?

Thanks in advance for your input.

    James,
Suggest a photo of the pad to show exactly what you describe.

We routinely judge pads with rebuilders marks. For judging, the rebuilder's stamp is invisible.

Re: Stamp Pad Judging... What If?

Thanks for the the replies. At Gene's request I have posted a few pictures of the stamps pad. This car is a '66 427/425 car and went though NCRS judging in Texas around the year 2000 where it received an NCRS Top Flight award. The car is for sale due to the death of the current owner a few years ago. I evaluated the car for the owners family back in July when they were trying to decide what to do with the car. The car had sat for about 5 years and is now up and running again. A fellow NCRS member who is interested in buying the car is flying in on Monday to look at it and possibly make an offer to the current owner's family. Thanks again for the input.

Looked at the closeup view and factory broach marks are visible near the cyl head. Looks like a old engine block after a light rebuild...

Why would any rebuilder deface a good stamp pad like that?

SOP so the rebuilder could recognize it as his if a problem arose. Most rebuilders to not get involved in the Nuances of a correct restoration, and it needs to be well established ahead of time if a "factory" appearance" is to be maintained. A few more $$ may be involved, but a good shop will work with you.

That rebuilder appeared to be located in the Kentucky area. Old "HD" left his mark on other rebuilt motors. I've known the "Silver Bullet" car that you're talking about since 1982 when a friend owned it. I remember it being a real N14 car with 4.11 gears and no radio. It was roaming the streets of Austin, TX during the 80's and it was a beast.
It's good to know it's alive and well, it left Austin in about 1992.

Interesting. I have had dozens of engines rebuilt and I have never seen anyone stamp the pad like that and I never mentioned it or even thought to mention it to them, you live and learn.

Re: Stamp Pad Judging... What If?

One of the reasons that ALL is done in my shop now is that I would get the wrong parts back that I sent in for work. I began stamping them in places where I thought they would be overlooked. Bingo, I cought a shop that gave me back a cast crank instead of my forged crank, another that gave me back a expensive aircraft crank that was not mine and toast and 6 aircraft cylinders that needed far more work than the ones I brought in. The shop owners denied switching parts. NO MORE, I seldom send things out, but if I do they all have my hidden stamp.
And I might add that it was common to get parts back with a shops stamp back then.

Back in 1970 (8-13-70) this was just a four year old used car. Nobody worried about stamp pads.

Exactly, I would have no problem with that pad.
