I have a hard time understanding how 1964 MUNCIE transmissions (3839601 & 38396040 have part numbers LOWER than a 1963 T10 transmission (3939723). That is not norm how part numbers are assigned.
I pulled out a May 63 P&A which lists 3831819 for the Muncie trans.
I understand where your coming from re: sequential numbering. As I am sure you are very aware how Standard Engineering assigns large blocks of numbers to each division for their exclusive use. From that point the division is free to use these numbers when and wherever they are needed. A lot of times they do appear sequential when developing a product but the numbers are frequently split up when needed on something else. Since the Muncie and later versions of the T-10 were being engineered about the same time it is easy to see how random assignment of part numbers would be out of sequence and quite normal. A classic example of this is the infamous 1956-57 water neck assigned PN 3837233 logically it should have been around 370---- or 371-----. Initially parts for the 64 Muncie was started in 1962. Your P&A is correct 3831819 is the '63 Corv. wide ratio Muncie. It does show up on Trans assy chart 3831700 along with 10 other Muncies. Chart also indicates Ident tag 3848378 was added & revised 4-10-63. No further tag info is listed.

Per Noland's research early '63 T-10 wide ratios were PN 3819115 and early close ratios were PN 3819117. As Noland indicates GM revised the T-10 versions November 29, 1963 (probably a blueprint date) with actual production usage probably starting in Dec. '62 or Jan. '63. A double check of print 3827149 indicates Noland was Dead on with his research. Early wide ratio T-10s PN 3819115 are Q-Q and early close ratio PN 3819117 are R-R. Later '63 T-10 wide ratios (like Gerald's) were PN 3839724 embossed tag A-M. A later close ratio T-10 PN 3839723 A-L. Per your NCRS chart close ratio 3820911 was S-S and close ratio 3820912 was T-T. Both of these I would consider early versions (no lock washers). They are identical except for the speedometer drive gear. The S-S was 3708144 and the T-T 3845079.
The NCRS chart at least for '63 is not complete!

Just as a simple follow-up.....I have a metal tag on my later T10 (April 8, 1963 build date) that shows "AM". Please see attached picture. From what I'm seeing, this is the only tag I should have. wide ratio T10

        Thanks
