The AIM page you reference is for later cars than your FEB 63 car..........the 3839XXX series transmissions were MUNCIE not T10

Thanks, Harry. Looks like your tag is held by the side cover bolt. Correct? Do you believe the numbers to be correct?

Yes, side bolts. But let's get more input on the numbers. As I mentioned I believe the tag changed from two letters like (QQ) to a number.

Looks like your tag is for a 250HP or 300HP 1963 with a wide ratio T-10!

That's according to the Long Island of several years ago!

              Re: 1963 Borg-Warner T-10 Date Codes

64 P&A lists 3839601 trans for a 64 MUNCIE with 2.20 close ratio and a 3839604 MUNCIE for a 64 MUNCIE w/2.20 close ration with 4.56 posi. 3839XXXseries of transmission numbers were never for the T10 trans.
You're welcome to install any tag you wish.

                Re: 1963 Borg-Warner T-10 Date Codes

Appears to be a lot of confusion re: embossed tags. GM Blueprint Transmission & Extension Assembly Chart #3827149 last revised 5-10-63 Indicates all T-10 transmission assemblies (13 are listed 5-2.54 ratios & 8- 2.20 ratios) have assigned 2 letter embossed tags. All have slight variations which are listed. Tag is attached to lower front cover bolt. T-10 assembly 3839723 tag should read A-L. It is 2.20, 1.64, 1.31, 1.00. Harry, doubt your tag is original. Just having a tag for judging is incorrect. Bob is on track.

David, I doubt it also. It was there, so I left it there. I do not think I ever came across anyone that stamps the two letter tags.

If anyone has a source, please post for Jerry and me.

Otherwise the great Carlisle hunt will begin.

                  Thanks

And the saga continues....please see attached picture from Noland Adams Restoration Guide #2. Does this mean the tag should be 3839724? Also, many references indicate for cars under 12000. Mine is over 12000, does this mean there was no tag at all???
Thanks. Let's get to the bottom of this great mystery!

This tag wouldn't be for a lower HP car.

Based on Noland's research you should have T-10 Trans assembly 3839724 (wide ratio) your speedometer drive gear was 3708144. The Brg. assy clutch gear was optional 907551 or 9419933 4 115548 lock washers were used. The embossed tag was A-M.

                          David,

If you are replying to Gerald Coia where is the A-M coming from? I do not see it listed below. It seems like it should be Q-Q.

                          Steve

Steve, My info is coming off GM blue print 3827149 (see my thread #39) As per Gerald Coia's (thread #40) he referenced Noland's vol. 2 book pages 142 & 143. Per Noland's research early '63 T-10 wide ratios were PN 3819115 and early close ratios were PN 3819117. As Noland indicates GM revised the T-10 versions November 29, 1963 (probably a blueprint date) with actual production usage probably starting in Dec. '62 or Jan. '63. A double check of print 3827149 indicates Noland was Dead on with his research. Early wide ratio T-10s PN 3819115 are Q-Q and early close ratio PN 3819117 are R-R. Later '63 T-10 wide ratios (like Gerald's) were PN 3839724 embossed tag A-M. A later close ratio T-10 PN 3839723 A-L. Per your NCRS chart close ratio 3820911 was S-S and close ratio 3820912 was T-T. Both of these I would consider early versions (no lock washers). They are identical except for the speedometer drive gear. The S-S was 3708144 and the T-T 3845079.
The NCRS chart at least for '63 is not complete!

I'm still not convinced on this.
I have a hard time understanding how 1964 MUNCIE transmissions (3839601 & 38396040 have part numbers LOWER than a 1963 T10 transmission (3939723). That is not norm how part numbers are assigned.
I pulled out a May 63 P&A which lists 3831819 for the Muncie trans.

Can we get an "official" response/position on this issue from the NCRS brass????
