The machine areas are where brake hoses go into the calipers

        This may help.
Photos of some NOS caliper halves. You can see what was painted and what was machined.
Photo 3 shows the areas that the judges look for on the top of the caliper.

          Patrick,

I have this photo of some calipers that were being sold on e-bay by someone who I thought knew what was correct. But the ones in my photo are missing some areas that you show as unpainted. Do you agree that the ones in the photo I'm positing have black paint where it shouldn't be? And it looks like the ones in my photo have white paint on the upper surfaces that you show as bare. Can you comment?

Gary, They do have black paint on the inside between the piston where they shouldn't, but that area can't be seen when installed.

Thanks for the images Patrick. The car is from Flint (Howard Hoover did the pre buy inspection). Miss my conversations with him.

                Gary,

Looks like they tried to fake the unpainted areas by painting them white.
Some try cast blast for the effect, some paint with matte clear as well.
Raw metal will, of course, rust.

                    Patrick,

Is this what should be left natural, as-machined?

Yes, plus the areas around the bleeder screws.

Do you paint the small nut on the opposite end of the bleeder? How about the bolts that hold the two halves together>

Best way to make sure the paint will stick. Used a wire wheel followed by brake cleaner, and then degreasurer detergent.
