A non side exhaust Corvette converted to a side pipe one will NEVER pass NCRS judging. I was referring to the smart ass people that come up & tell you whats wrong with your Corvette without being ask to.

      Re: Side Exhaust '67 coupe

Bruce, let me back up a step and start with a definition of Judging. We judge a car as delivered to the first owner with normal dealer preparation. Normal dealer preparation probably includes washing the car, installing the hubcaps, removing the window sticker, etc.

Installing side pipes is not normal dealer preparation. So we look to see how the car appears the day it is being judged. If we see a side pipe car we check to see if they are original to the car, same as fuel injection, a 427, L88, L89 plus seeing if all the colors and options match the trim tag.

There have been many comments in this thread both pro and con, It's your car, please add them. I would say that most of us would enjoy owning a side pipe car.

      Cheers

JR, thanks again for the compliment. No on the side pipes, but the real knock-offs with radial tires does let it ride better especially when the A/C is on high!!!

            Hi Bruce,
Have you driven or ridden in a mid year with side pipes? I have installed side pipes and I have removed side pipes from cars I have owned over the years. I love the sound, but after an hour or so on the highway it gets old in a hurry.
            Kind Regards,
            Pete

Put the side pipes on and enjoy the car for what is was made for ( driving ) i drive a c6 zo6 , headers , cam , performance tune and b&b bullit exhaust ( the loudest exhaust that is steet legal) and i enjoy every minute of it !(especially when a young guy says " that sounds "bad") mid year side pipes sound "great" , espcially when you have your foot into it.

Peter's comment is right on. In an undercar exhaust on an extended trip, you listen to the radio and converse w/your passenger w/relative ease. You lopk for opportunities to punch the throttle to hear the exhaust wail. Stops are dictated by bladder capacity. In a sidepipe car (like mine), you install your high quality earplugs, leave the radio off, develop a set of hand signals to communication w/your passenger, and stop when the pounding in your head becomes annoying. The exhaust, even at idle, is intoxicatingly racecar-like. Still, I love my sidepipes and wouldn't change them. The design aesthetic and omnipresent exhaust note are intoxicating. And the focus on my driving I develop, being isolated in the cockpit, makes me intensely experience every mile.

Side pipes are not a performance enhancement. In fact power reduction. One has them cause they think thy look cool and like the noise. Kinda like having a BB hood on a SB car. They like the look or the image. No not correct, but some don't care about correct. Different strokes for different folks.

I just can't understand why these same persons are so concerned about the deductions taken for added options when counting up points lost. Seems kinda goofy.

Gene, my car came with side pipes, dealer installed on the day the car was sold to the first buyer as document on the dealer invoice.
Don't care about point deductions from NCRS they don't own my car. Except for the Dr Rebuild parts I've installed I know the car is mostly original. The pipes are NOT loud! Yes my car is a SB with a BB hood. Just the way I like it.

I appreciate Top Flight cars and respect the effort of those who have prepared them, but there are some of us in NCRS who make selected mods for driveability and/or aesthetics while keeping are cars otherwise original. We expect also to achieve some level of flight judging. My 66 L79 coupe had a number of such enhancements but still achieved an NCRS second flight due to the orioginality of the rest of the car. I was quite happy to be able to drive my car anywhere in the style I liked while still being able to do well on the show field. For us, being aware of the deducts for various items we change so as not to mathematically disqualify us from flight judging contention makes our restorations an enjoyable three dimensional chess game. This may not be for everyone in NCRS, but I suspect there are many of us out there w/this approach.

I agree, I also had a '66 L79 (Mosport Green), that was a great driver, it had added side exhaust (AO Smith body), repop knockoff wheels, added Vintage Air A/C, and a beautiful dark green leather interior (green only came in vinyl from the factory). I had never had it judged before but it got a second flight at a regional that I was thrilled to get. That was a fun car to drive, and I still enjoyed NCRS judging too.

My Sebring Silver 63 Coupe looked great with factory side pipes. Back in 1976 Corvette Memphis went to Orlando for the NCCC convention. It was July and you can imagine how hot it was. When I returned from the trip I removed the factory side pipes and threw them in the trash! Loved the looks and hated the sound for 2000 miles round trip.

Side pipes are easier to take when the top is down. Just listening to the quiet thunder as you cruise down the highway.

Your getting a lot of unsolicited advice, ain't ya?

If you don't trim certain areas of fiberglass, it will show, when the covers are installed.

Your car will look great with the pipes, man!
