62 Idler Pulley

I was looking through the Zip catalog and noticed the idler pulley for the 62 340 hp and F.I. engines.

My 62 was bought new by my father and had the 340 hp engine.

It has no idler pulley. I'm assuming the other two pulleys would have two belts on them.

Was the 340 hp engine ever produced without the idler pulley?

I don't want to add one, just curious.

Although shown in the AIM, this arrangement was never used in production.

As John indicated, no idler pulley was used on any 62.

Although not originally used on the solid axle Corvettes, I've decided the second/redundant water pump belt is a worthwhile addition to my '60.

I used the idler pulley, deep groove crank and water pump pulleys from solid lifter Sting Ray engines, all of which are readily available. No issue at all getting the generator belt to align.

The whole installation is "period plausible" and looks right at home:

NCRS member Greg Simon has a non functional idler pulley on his Top Flight 62....don't know if he took a point deduct or not

I asked him about it and he said it was on the car when he bought the car so he decided to leave it

My research found it was authorized for 62 models but never made it to the production line.

Dont have the car anymore but it did receive deductions in both Flight and Bloomington judging. I don't remember the exact point deduct. All the "experts" believe there were no 62s produced with the idler pulley. That is the way it will be judged.

My my car was a late build June 28 so I left the idler on figuring it was possible that some late cars may have gotten the idler. I left it on also because of the extra sense of security on a car that was driven regularly. Since you know or reasonably know your car did not have the idler your only loss by not adding one will be security.

You can use the secondary pulley grooves without using an idler. However, it's a whole lot easier with the idler.

I did that on my '63 roadster in order to get a redundant water pump belt. Frankly, it was a PITA to install.
