Have you replaced the aftermarket electronic switch with a plain old set of mechanical points?
Also your symptoms could be a broken breaker plate ground wire. You can test by disconnecting the VAC (to keep the breaker plate from moving) and running a jumper wire from the breaker plate through the cap window to a convenient point on the engine to ensure a good ground.
