    Re: 1971 Key envelope

    Hi Daniel,
    Interesting details about your car!
You're fortunate to have the original owner to talk to!!!
Many folks search long and hard to determine their car's history and to locate the original owner.
I really don't think I ever had a key envelope for my 71. It had been ordered for the dealer's stock and the keys were attached to a ring with a small plastic 'holder' for the car's identity and stock number. An additional tiny ring holding the 2 key knock-outs was attached to the larger ring. I was given that ring and holder when I bought the car.
    Regards,
    Alan

The stock number 219 was written on the back of the owner's manual and the front of the P-O-P folder too. I've always imagined they had been removed from the glove box for safe keeping while the car sat around waiting for a buyer. It was on the dealer's lot about 7-8 weeks.

Alan -- Great picture. I read on one of the other discussions about how you bought your red '71 on a lunch break and that you're the only driver the car has ever seen. Cool stuff. Here is a question somewhat off topic: do you use the 4 original keys, or did you have copies made and use copies? One of these days I'm going to convince you or Kevin Goodman to get down to Bethany Beach and teach me something about my car.

Alan in response to your request for reproduction examples (other comparisons):

Here are four different envelopes. The first one to the left is the original without glue. I know this one is original to my one 1970 because I have spoken to all the previous owners, including the original gentleman who verified the original documents that he kept and which are still with the car today. This car, when I purchased it, had less than 20,000 original miles. The other three are up for interpretation.

Jason, that is a great comparison shot, thanks for taking the time to post it. Just look at all the differences as compared to the first original! Now there are plenty of notes to make during judging, if you can recall this photo. The font sizes, font spacing, clarity in print, the inside line on the key....Just to name a few!

Thanks to those for helping to prove my point. We now have five original NO GLUE examples, how many more do we need, to push this to the JG?

                  Re: 1971 Key envelope

Hi Alan, I have no idea what is out there that can be bought today. In fact when I went looking through my different documents for these key envelopes I forgot I had these different ones. The only one I can say is original is the first one.

The "clip" you refer to is one of the indicators in my opinion of an original but that is just my thought as I have no proof. I would also wonder if there may have been more than one producer of the envelope supplying GM, thereby accounting for some differences?

Here is a front and back photo of a new reproduction from Corvette Central that Alan asked about. Notice the glue application on the flap and blurred part number. Sorry for the sideways pictures, but always happens when I upload them from my IPAD. Hope this helps for comparison purposes.

The glue daub is way off. Aside from the printing issues that gives it away immediately.

I agree. More than the glue issue with that example.

Looks like the known original #1 has a bit more space between the bottom of the envelope and the key and there is a little more space between the top of the key and the font.

Not sure about the exact year. But I believe the keys would be pre 73. The J was in the third position on codes from 73-81. But was used on earlier cars in a different position.
