    1966 L79 Oil Pump

I need the help of a few of you engine experts out there. I recently had our 1966 325/350 L79 rebuilt. Runs great, but I noticed it seems to drink a little oil during break in. No leaks..., but I noticed a little smoke out of the passenger's side exhaust. Drove it a little more and now notice smoke out of both sides especially when engine gets hot.

The oil pressure on the gauge reads very high at start up then lowers at idol after driven a while. Gauge still reads high, but I have not checked to see if the gauge is calibrated yet. I intend to.

I just purchased some other parts from Paragon and was reading their catalog and came across their oil pumps. I noticed they say, "High Pressure oil pump, all 327. Use with caution as pressure could cause seals to blow." This was on part 10367

I know a new high pressure oil pump was in my rebuild.

Does anyone have a similar experience or knowledge in this area?

I am going to check the true oil pressure with another gauge, then decide if I need to change the oil pump to a new standard pressure pump. Also plan to change the valve seals.

    Any insight is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you
    Jeff

Your application originally used a standard pressure, standard volume pump and that's exactly what you need now. Assuming that the pump you have is a standard volume, you don't need to change the whole pump to get it to standard pressure. All you need to replace is the pressure relief valve in the pump. If you have a high volume pump (gears 1.3" long), then you need to replace the whole pump.

I don't think your oil burn problem is related to the pump but you need to correct the pump anyway.

I agree no need for the high volume or high pressure as the standard pump works just fine. I change mine about 3 years ago as someone put a high pressure/volume pump and my gauge was pegged to right most of the time. My gauge works like it should with the standard pump.

I hate to hi-jack this thread, but where would I find the torque spec for the oil pump bolt to re-install? The shop manual just says torque to spec but doesn't give the spec. I have the exact same issues as Jeff has.

        Thanks

You will find it in the engine torque specs section at the back of the factory service manual.

OK, I'm home now and I looked it up. It's 65 lb/ft. From memory earlier, I was thinking 70 lb/ft. So, I would have been close.

            Success. And no oil leaks.

            Thanks
