    Interesting Original 1959 Seat Cushions

These 4 complete seat assemblies were found at the Lakeland NCRS Regional by a friend. They appear to be display pieces that, as he was told, were in someone's basement for a very long time. They're brand new/old pieces and have never been apart.

My upholstery shop is going to replace the crumbled foam and covers soon, and we're planning to take some photos of the naked frames when those comes off.

Here are some photos. Interesting tags with SO numbers too.

    Hi Rich.

That's really cool. I'm going to investigate my 59 seats further after looking at your pictures. I did manage to order all of my turquoise interior from Al Knoch on Friday. Estimated delivery is between June 2-11. I plan on doing the installation myself. They're sending me the installation video ahead of time so I can start reviewing what all is involved. I plan on taking lots of pictures as I work on them and will probably add a thread here on the site after they're done. I hope to find some "treasures" during the installation just as you have here. We'll see...

Hi Jill, I need to update the other thread, but here are a few pics of the dash after I finished up the major install steps recently. The windshield is tinted on this car. Note that the speaker screen sits between the top of the fiberglass dash and under the pad.....NO glue can be used around the screen or it will cause valleys in the surrounding areas. I ONLY glue the front area under the windshield gutter. Everything else holds it in place.

Suggest you not touch those seats until they have been fully researched. The fact they have an SO tag suggests they were put together (probably at the Tech Center) for a special purpose/car. We are losing too many original/historical pieces/cars in the quest for looking "NCRS pretty" and "better" then original. The SO tag tells a story, find out what it is before destroying!

David, What do you recommend I do to research that SO number? Is there a list somewhere?

My friend has a '59 but his seat assemblies were badly rusted and found these at the Swap Meet and bought them.

I did a little checking and came up dry regarding the SO number. I found some pictures of the '57 Super Sport and it had SO 90181 on the custom interior pieces and trunk board. These seats have SO 90110 dated '58 and '59 so I'm confused about how the numbers were sequenced.

            Rich:

            Those seats looked very familiar!
Both of my '59 backs are dated 3/4/58 on the plastic tags (part no. 3761741).
My passenger bottom cushion is dated 9/26/58 on a paper tag (part no. 3761748). Driver tag is gone.
My '59 was assembled in Dec. 1958.

              Hi Rich.

Love your dash pictures. I'm getting close to the interior installation. Thanks for your tips on the dash pad install. I'll be sure to take them into great consideration.

Not surprising not in sequence. SO numbers were usually assigned to particular projects and not always to a particular item. In this case, the 90110 number MIGHT have been assigned to a project that predates the '57 Super Sport. This number sounds somewhat familiar, will check my archive records to see if anything pops up. You might also check with my desert friend Loren Lundberg, he has an uncanny ability to come up with such information.

Re: Interesting Original 1959 Seat Cushions

I found these heavy paper tags hog-ringed to each of my '59 bottom cushions. I did not re-install them because they were too delicate and because there is no mention of them in the 58-60 JM. They are from the supplier of the seat frames (McInerney). You can do an archive search "seat tag paper" to learn more.

                      Brad,
They are original to your seats. Put back on.! This is one of the reasons I like seeing original parts "unrestored".

                        Brad:

Did you mean hog-ringed to your seat backs?

I see you have a 3761741 and a 3761742 tag. I have (2) 3761741 tags. I think one of my tags is wrong; should be a 3761742 tag.

These are the only dates on my car that violate the 6-month NCRS rule. They are definitely original to this car.

                          Bill,

What I've found in 56-7 is the seat back tags were slipped onto one of the vertical rods and the bottom seat tags were hog ringed.

Always thought it was odd that the seat back tags weren't hog ringed.

Bill.....I took them off the seats in 1969.....I really don't remember whether they were on the bottoms or backs! But I do remember that they were hog-ringed and that they were on only 2 out of the 4 cushions. I stuck them in a baggie and they've been hanging above my workbench ever since!....Brad
