Re: 1966 Front License Plate Bracket

Gents: Got the parts. This thing is a bear to get on. Do I have to remove the bumper? What's up with these self locking washers? No nut? Any guidance appreciated as I'm making a mess of this. Thanks.

You should not have to remove the bumpers. The nuts are welded in the bumpers. Hopefully they are still there. Its no fun sneaking a nut in there.

Keith: The holes are there to attach the bumper bar (2 on each side). Tight fit and at a bit of an angle. I assume I put in the bolt; the locking washer; then washer; and crank it down? Is that the correct order and method? I figured that this would take a mere 10 minutes. Not happening.

You might have to loosen all the other front bumper bolts to align and adjust them to fit together

Exactly as Keith says loosen up the bumpers and the inner brackets and you should be fine. Run the added license plate bar bolts through the threads with some WD 40 before you mount the bar. You never know what the condition of the threads may be. You may even have to run a tap through to clean the threads up.

It can be difficult to get everything aligned so as noted above loosen all the bolts on the entire front bumper assembly. I had to take a ratcheting strap to squeeze the bumpers together into the proper position and line the bolts for the middle bracket. It takes a little time to get it right. These cars are 50 years old and there may have been some repairs done over the years that will effect the fit.

Wasn't the offset only for big blocks with C60 and Power Glide ?

I believe the off-set front license bracket was for big blocks with A/C. I should have mentioned that.

You are correct. Only BB with auto & AC had the license bracket on the drivers side. I had a 67 400 auto with AC & it was that way. It fact my old 67 is on the cover of Dobbens old book. My 390 4 speed is in the center.

Guys: Thanks for all the help. Got it installed after loosening the front bumpers. Looks great especially with the NOS 1966 Texas tag.
