    1956 Early Exhaust System

I have a early 56 that has the 2 hole exhaust manifolds. I am looking for a exhaust system for it, I have checked both Gardner and Allens but neither one has the 2 hole system. Any suggestions on what to do.
    Thanks
    Sheldon

My 56 Chevy convertible has the 2 hole manifold. You might look at some of the tri-five catalogs and see if something can be adapted and modified by your local muffler shop.

The only way to do it properly is in place. No one sells the correct part. If you call me I will talk you thru it and send you some photos of mine. I did it in place.

OK, I'll ask a dumb question:

Couldn't you adapt the exhaust pipes for a later 3-stud manifold by just making/scrounging a 2-hole mating flange to slip over the pipes? Is there anything else about the pipes for the early 2-stud manifolds which is actually different?

Are both the two stud and three stud manifolds the ram horn style? (not the passenger log type manifold?)

Yes, and that's why it seems (to me, anyway) that one could use the same exhaust pipe with a different attaching flange.

The 55 Corvette exhaust system should be the same as the 56. 55 had round mufflers.

                Troy,

'56 manifolds, both 2 bolt and 3 bolt, were center dump, ram's horn style.

'55 manifolds were NOT center dump, ram's horn style. Outlet was offset, forward on one side and rearward on the other.

The two styles of manifolds take different exhaust pipes.

when i restored the 56 that went to rick hendrick's collection, it was an early 56 with 2 stud exhaust manifolds. seem to recall i got the exhaust system from corvette central. wherever they came from, they fit perfect. rare occasion when i didn't have to take some pipes to the local speed shop and use their tubing bender. mike

I have #76 and a 2 bolt exhaust. I bought the 1st section withouth the 2 bolt flange welded and purchssed a 2 botl flange which I had welded into place.

Sheldon - How long ago was it that you talked to Gardner?

Just within the last 2 months, an owner of a '56 here in Houston has been working with Gardner on the 2 hole system. They were going to reproduce the 2 hole pipe flanges, the correct orientation, and part of a complete system.

I'll get you in touch with the folks involved if that would help.
