Enclosed is a photo of the page listing engine codes for 1966 Chevrolet models from my 1966 Chevrolet Parts Illustration and Special information Catalog (Oct. 1965).

Yes, I knew the first 1 was not techanically part of the production sequencing number, but what was the need for the leading 1 spacer? I believe the leading 1 was used everywhere the VIN was stamped, at least on the VIN tag, Engine Pad, Transmission and Frame.

Was it some sort of requirement that VINs had to be 6 digits long?

First of all thank you all for trying to educate me on this. I do believe I have a good hold on this number and what it means.
I purchased the pocket guide and the lime book and found it in those.
It sounds like this would be a good motor to pull out of storage and return to the original car if at all possible.
The question is what is the maximum I should consider paying for it? If I can get it for cheap, great. But, if not, what would it be
worth paying for it? Any thoughts?

"lime book". The fool that put that book together should have his head examined. And maybe one day soon it will go back into print.

My car, which I've owned since Oct 1976 and, I personally knew the 2 previous owners as high school classmates, is a vin of 112419 and was final assembly of Jan 21, 1966. It was however a AO Smith body with a T0II0IL 427 (built 01 10 1966) .
            Hope this helps.

The Lime Book is the most comprehensive little book for decoding engine pad stamps, Period.
              In my opinion.
