Re: C1 Alignment
MOST OLD TIME alignment shops had a tool/fixture which was attached to the upper portion of the spindle support (upright as some of you call them). The front end was secured to the alignment machine and a hefty hydraulic jack was placed against the arm of the tool and jacked to bend the upper portion of the spindle support (this was MUCH better than applying heat!!!!!). There was a left and a right tool. MOST of these tools were a fixed configuration and some were adjustable (like the difference between an open end wrench and a crescent wrench). Back in the 40s-50s there were MANY cars which had a similar suspension configuration like the 49-54 Chevy pass cars and the 53-62 Vettes, so these bending tools were just part of an alignment shop's tool inventory. I only wish I had latched onto some of these old time tools years ago when some of the old alignment shops closed their doors.
I presume MOST of you know that 49-54 pass car and 53-62 Vette front cross members/suspensions are virtually identical and all adjustments and alignment procedures are the same. Except pass cars did not use the tapered shims.
