My 65 BB lost its original transmission back in its drag racing days . It has a 66 close ratio in it now with a right side speedo cable . I have a correct 65 tail shaft housing . can I just switch the housing or do I need to also change the tail shaft ?

You can just change the extension housing. It will work perfectly with the 1966 transmission. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 65 close ratio transmission
My 65 had a drivers side speedo location and I wound up changing it for a passenger side version from Auto Gear. I'm only going off memory here but recall that the drive gear will need a slight bit of tweaking to line up when switching from one side speedo plug to the other side, maybe not.Mike T. - Prescott AZ.- Top

Re: 65 close ratio transmission
Bill -- I'm confused; the passenger side tail housing # ....584 is the correct one for all of '65 and '66 (and '67). So what tail housing casting number is on your '66 unit ?- Top

Re: 65 close ratio transmission
Ok Wayne now Im confused . I looked in the assy. manual it says it should have a pass side connection . On the internet it says 63 to 65 have a 3846429 left side cable . and for 66 a 3851325 . my car has a 66 3885010 main case (with a 66 vin #) and a 3857584 tail housing with a right side cable . So do all 65BB have the 584 rt side cable ? I have two complete 64 /65 trans.with pat. numbers and 7/8 bore and one has a 584 and one has a 429 tail ??? If the 584 rt side is correct thats great .- Top

Re: 65 close ratio transmission
Bill, as mike said if you find you have to change the side the speedo cable comes out on the only thing you need to change is the position of the speedo gear. you will see the area where it sits on the tail shaft on the right side speedo cable the gear sits towards the rear of the area on the tailshaft on a left side speedo cable its placed towards the front of the area. be careful trying to move it it is very soft and easily damaged i would press it off then heat it up with a tourch it expands very easily and once heated you will find it will slipon pretty easy and once it cools will be very tight pretty easy to do

Re: 65 close ratio transmission
Joe -- that's one of those A. Colvin (Chevrolet by the numbers) nuggets that will not die. Chevrolet stated about the pasenger side takeoff revision both in their 1965 New Product Manual (July 1964) and Chevrolet Service news (Sept 1964) that:
"the 4-sp trans extension housing and mainshaft are revised to provide for a right hand speedo take-off. (Also) applies to Chevelle, Chevy II and Corvette".Last edited by Wayne M.; March 8, 2015, 01:56 PM.- Top

Re: 65 close ratio transmission
Bill - As Robert pointed out, that drive gear bruises easily, especially if the person pressing it on get's a little carried away. The non-original Muncie in my 65 Smallblock Coupe was in need of a rebuild and just before we pulled it out, the speedo quit working. Turned out that one of the 'many' previous owners didn't line the drive gear up correctly and as you can see from this pic (gear on left), and beat it up while trying to get it in place.
The replacement drive gears, from places like D&L trans in NY are pretty cheap if you find you need to replace yours.Mike T. - Prescott AZ.- Top
