I'm in the process of having my 427/435 engine rebuilt and I have a question regarding the oil pan mounting bolts. According to the judging guide there is no mention of the bolt type or markings. Upon researching various vendors, I found there is a set of all recessed/indented head bolts with E and L markings available. Another vendor offers 2 standard hex head bolts and the remaining bolts are recessed/indented with the E and L markings. Two of the bolts in both kits are longer and these are used to attach the oil pan to the timing cover. Is there a right and wrong head and marking on the bolts for this application? Thank you.

Re: 67 BB Oil Pan Bolts
Kerry,
According to the TIM&JG 1967 fifth edition on page 192, section titled "Oil pan & drain plug". "ALL pans are a two step design - a shallower forward area which curves down to a deeper flat bottomed sump at the rear. Original pans have steel reinforcements spot-welded to each corner of the pan. The pan is attached to the block along the perimeter with 7/16" indented hex head bolts with captured serrated washers, except for the bolts passing through the corner reinforcements, which are 1/2" head size. An L or and E head mark is commonly seen."Leif

Re: 67 BB Oil Pan Bolts
Leif,
Thank you for your reply. Not only did you answer my question you pointed out a deficiency. My 67 TIM&JG is the fourth edition and there is no mention of the bolts on page 137. I think it's time to upgrade.- Top

Just for reference here are some pictures of Hardware for big blocks There could be loads of different headmarkings for 67 the E and L are just some well recognized ones.- Top

Re: 67 BB Oil Pan Bolts
Rich, Thank you for the pictures. The number of head markings is mind boggling. I guess the bottom line is the bolt itself was the most important to GM than the head marking. Now however for collectors, the head marking are the most important. Thanks again.- Top

Re: 67 BB Oil Pan Bolts
Here's the oil pan bolts off a mid-May '65 cast 396. Sixteen of them were the "U"; one a recessed "L", and 2 odd-balls.

Re: 67 BB Oil Pan Bolts
Thanks Wayne. I guess it goes to show regardless of how diligent collectors are and how educated the judges are, there is a lot we really don't know or understand. Thank you for your reply. I hope this thread helps others.- Top

Re: 67 BB Oil Pan Bolts
NO ONE at GM paid ANY attention to headmarks - with multiple suppliers for individual fasteners, all they cared about was part numbers. The headmarked bolts in the line-side bin may be gone, replaced, or mixed by tomorrow.- Top
