    Re: c-2 firewall J clips

our unmolested 66, an ao smith body, has the J-clips near the heater, secured to the firewall with recessed hex head self tapping fasteners. bills photos are from a st louis body, and its C-clips are RIVETED to its firewall. would be interesting to gather more info on the two different means of C-clip attachment on multiple st louis vs AO Smith bodies. since the 65 396 i am currently reassembling is an AO Smith car, i elected to fasten the clips with recessed hex self tappers. mike

James -- let's talk about one clip in particular (or what I think is the 'absence of' in the case of your car, and on my late July L78).

First shot has black (shaky) arrow pointing at the hole in question. I notice in one of your photos (I believe) that the same hole is shown. 2nd photo shows same hole in which I've inserted a 1/8" dia. drill (0.125"), so that's the size. 3rd photo shows same hole from the inside of the car. I don't see any evidence that a rivet has ever been there.

4th pic is of same location on my early '65 C60 car. The clip is there ! (What do you think of my orange +ve battery cable ?)

There's a lot more to investigate on the location and type of these firewall clips, if we dare delve into it.

BTW, my total firewall clip count on my 396 is 13, but includes the non-riveted one on a stud of the heater core cover for the wire "drop" to the starter (just like a non-air car).

Wayne I dont remember if I had one on my heater core cover . I looked through my pictures & I cant tell .Do you have the three next to the lower cover ? Does your 396 have an X below the job number on the front or rear bulkhead ?

No idea why that hole appears on 396 cars but has a clip for a/c equipped cars. Can't think of what wiring would be different since the battery is on the left side for both 396 and A/C equipped cars. Next question, are the 396 cars with hole in the firewall St. Louis cars or AO Smith. The 396 I restored is a St. Louis built car and as you pointed out has the hole. I'll have to see if my AO Smith built '65 with A/C has the clip installed at that location. The other 396 car I photographed for restoration research is a St. Louis built car also and I found a photo showing the hole but no clip. I also dug up another picture of a non a/c, non 396 car with the hole in the firewall but no clip. My assumption is that that the clip gets installed for a/c equipped cars and is open for non a/c and 396 cars.

                    Wayne,

I believe your negative battery cable should be residing in the clip where your positive cable currently is located. The positive battery cable should be held by a clip behind the battery and against the firewall...fairly difficult to get to but it's there on my '67 (possibly different than a '65).
