    c-2 firewall J clips

puttin a 65 396 back together, one that ole bubba drilled a lot of extra holes in its firewall.I filled most of bubba's holes and am in process of re-installing the J-clips. used our unrestored 66 425 vet's firewall to get an idea of where and what type of clips are needed for the 65. i come up with Five non-rubberized J-clips along the top of the firewall, the three used to hang the bowden cable as well as the heater's wiring and TI harness (referring now to the 65 as its TI pulse amp is on pass side whereas the 66 pulse amp is on drivers side).the additional J clips, 5 of them on the 66, were rubberized--the J clips for the headlite harness, the backup lite switch harness as well as the starter harness and the speedo cable( it uses a pair of rubberized J-clips). those of you all with unmolested 65 and 66 BBC's, could you confirm or refute the above J-clip observations? thanks guys, mike

forgot to mention that you can re-rubberize your J-clips with Plasti Dip from performix. it also comes in handy to put a rubber coating on tools such as pliers. mike

thanks bill. i come up with a total of 10 j-clips on the un molested 66 425hp firewall only. i didn 't count the ones riveted to the top surround. and so far, i've identified only9 clips on the 65 396, the firewall of which was far from unmolested. again, i am not counting the clips on the top surround. mike

bill: only one i can't account for on my firewall is the one above and outboard of the master cylinder/brake clutch assembly mounting nut. can u take a close-up of that area? thanks again, you've saved me a trip to view another 396 about 100 miles away. mike

got 12 out of 13 figured out. only one i'm unclear about is the one below the heater, closest to the ground. can u shoot a close up of that clip? been putting off tackling this aspect of the "going back together" phase of this resto since most all of bubba's holes and the factory holes for the clips were filled in prior to my blackout of the firewall. thanks again bill. owe ya one. mike

                        Mike,

I know I'm a little late to te party but here are a few firewall pictutes of '65 396 #22161. The car went through all levels of flight last year. I have a lot of pictures of original NCRS Bowtie 396 cars that I researched while restoring 22161. I'd be happy to send you anything that might be helpful.

                        Regards,

                        James West

                            Re: c-2 firewall J clips

I'd start with the '65 AIM; firewall clips are shown on the following pages:

                            UPC C60, sheet E2
                            UPC 11-13, sheet B5
                            UPC 12, sheet A9
                            UPC M20, sheet 4
UPC Z01, sheet 1 (if so optioned)

There may be others. Make sure all the revision records agree roughly with the production date of the car in question.

Then there's the factor of Dow-Smith (A-bodies) versus S-bodies; I believe some clips were installed in Ionia.

In theory, firewall clips on my early '65 air L76 coupe (S280 trim tag) should be identical to those on my late L78 conv. (S7755 trim tag) [I think}.

Too cold in the garage to verify, especially with the cars in running condition (ie. too many wires, shielding, cables).
