    '96 Front Bumper Overspray

I started working on the restoration of the front bumper area on my LT4 and noticed these overspray patterns. Is this expected?

Floyd that looks like a repair . The bumpers were not on the car when painted at the factory . There is no way to tell when or where the repairs were done but I dont think it was at the factory .

Floyd, I actually worked at the factory. Touch up was done on about 90% of the C-4's but on the front bumper, Bill's correct it probably wasn't done at BG.

        Thanx Gentlemen,
This creates a quandary. I see no other evidence of repair and the front valence wind deflectors are beat to heck with curb rash but are the correct part for originality. This car has never been judged. I now have to choose between:

        1) Leave it alone and take it to a meet so others can look at it and perhaps see other clues I am missing, or
        2) Remove it so it appears more factory typical

Leave it alone. I have some similar overspray on a different location on my 72. It's not typical, but nothing points to it being anything but factory. You can always remove it later, but you can't add it back.

Floyd, for whatever it's worth, I have a 95 with 15,000 miles and there is no overspray in that area. To my knowledge, those bumpers were sprayed off the car. My car has gone all the way to the Hill Award and no judge has ever deducted any point(s) because lack of overspray in that area. I'm not an expert, just sharing my personal experience.

I think you are familiar with my car (see picture).

That's the way I was leaning. I place much more emphasis on originality - even if it isn't "typical". I would like others to see it.

Floyd, although the features in your pics look sorta familiar, I'm having a little trouble locating those exact spots on my no-hit original owner 96. But in looking all around at my front bumper areas I see no such evidence of similar overspray. Nonetheless, I agree with the other posters - I'd leave it alone.

Floyd, from the looks of the pictures, it appears that the bumper has never been removed. Wire looms in the corners are neatly in placed, the black cover is flush and shims appear to be correctly placed.

Would it be possible for you to send me pictures of the same areas on your car?

                          Thanx,

Okay folks, here are some photos of C4's being painted at the factory. As you can see the front fascia and the headlamp covers are not painted with the C4.
Just to give you something to do, go and look at the hood hold down springs on your C4 and see if you can find any over spray.

I bet some of you can find some, just saying not making any statement.

Okay Pat, I took the bait. My hood hold down springs and bumper exhibit a bit of body color overspray. But I have yet to decide what I should do. While the lower front bumper respray "may" have been done at the factory, it's not typical and I really don't want to take a deduction for something I can easily correct. It's not like this car is a Bowtie candidate - it's a 98k mile, 4th owner resto project car. I'm starting to lean towards removing the overspray, removing the paint from the bolts that shouldn't have it, etc.
