    1963 Hubcaps....

Where is the best place to get a pristine set of 63 hubcaps? What is the going rate for a nice set?

Also for an October 62 built car should/can they be frosted?

    Any input and/or leads appreciated.

    Thanks....

Rich, let's just say this will be expensive. The cost to re-chrome the bars and the spinner is more than buying the reproductions from Trim-Parts. Last I looked four sets of bars will be about $550 to $600 and the four spinners will be another $150. Now you need to find a good set of stainless steel caps, lets say another $300. Now add in the labor to take out all the dings and polish them, another $200. Then add profit.

You see where I'm going. I went through this process with my own a few years back and as I recall my cost was about $900. I sent them out to have the dings removed, not too many. Plus I avoided the profit.

Now you did say pristine which translates to $$$$$$

Richard, Even a pristine set sometimes needs the bars and the spinners as Harry says. Once in a great while you can find a nice set on ebay. It will likely take some time to find a nice set, There are always 63 hub caps on Ebay but most will need some serious restoring.

OUCH! Should I put locks on mine? The originals Like mine have some minor pits on both the bars and spinners, but you have to be up close to see them. I've decided to leave them be for now. I know the repos are out there and they look pretty good, so maybe some day - i have only one or two slight dings in the large inner portion of one, but you can't own a car for over 51 years and go through 5 sets of tires without having to pound the hubcaps back on with a rubber hammer. Therein is where the damage occurs around the outer rim. No matter how careful you are, it's going to happen. Of course you could leave them loose and watch them roll by you on the street some day.

Harry, you are spot on!. I just finished restoring a set for my 63 and the prices you quoted are right on. But I salvaged the originals.

My October 29 built car does not have frosted caps. I have been told the change from frosted to polished was around #2500. My car is #2507.

Stuart, it sound like yours are in about the same condition as mine, they're 50-50. They look good at 50 feet or 50 mph.

Richard, I have set of pristine caps (not frosted), but they do not have bars or spinners. You'd have to buy bars and spinners from Trim Parts, as your old ones would not look good with these. PM me if you're interested.

Wow, I feel very fortunate regarding my 63 caps after reading all these posts. My caps were in very nice shape when I got my car. All I did was polish the snot out of them with Never Dull.

I think I should have black in the words and script in the center, correct??

According to post #7 you should have polished caps NOT frosted.

I am confused.... The post #7 says he was told the change from frosted to polished was around #2500

                              One more question:

How can you tell if the caps are original and not repos....?
