It used to only have to go for an evaluation. However, the evaluation was so much like the Flight judging process that it evolved into both. That is why you have to declare ahead of time if you are a Bowtie candidate. In addition, it now prequalifies those who might be good enough to try for Bowtie + Duntov at the National.

Bruce, if your goal is Bowtie, I would suggest you leave the current cap on the car. The judges will detect whatever type of reproduction you put on the car. Also, as someone else has said, the goal of the Bowtie award is to show the car AS BUILT buy St. Louis. Trying to alter the car prior to the examination for the award will just hurt the car's chances of earning the award.

Personally, I would suggest looking for a nice used original gas cap.

Continuing this discussion, Dealer added accessories were common & I'm sure added to the new owner's enjoyment of their car(s). I have found numerous original Factory installed parts "repackaged" in "Chevrolet Approved Accessories" & other GM model accessories boxes that were Dealer purchased as indicated on the receipts. The most common "repackaged" I have found are standard interior rearview mirrors in "Glare-Proof" Mirror boxes; but I did find an original Corvette gas cap in a Chevrolet Locking Gas Cap box.

Interesting Peter - There were 3 dealer installed items on my car - locking gas cap, anti-glare rear view mirror and floor mats. You might have found the first two originals! By any chance do you still have the gas cap in the locking cap box?

And, none of those items should be considered Bowtie items. They were dealer-installed not as the car left the factory.
