1970 454 with ac dip stick question

I need to know the length of the dipstick on a 1970 454 with AC. I know it is supposed to have a black top like the small blocks & there is a long & short tube & both were used on the 454 so were there 2 different lengths when the long & short tubes are used. Guide doesn't say what the lengths are.

    Kenneth------

I don't think that there was a difference between C-60-equipped LS-5 and LS-5 not equipped with C-60. Some folks think so, I do not. However, there was a difference between early LS-5 and later. Early cars used a dipstick which was 17-13/32" from seat to "full" mark and 19" from seat to "add" mark. Later 1970 used a dipstick that was 22-11/16" from seat to "full" mark and 23-1/2" from seat to "add" mark.

I don't have the length of the early tube. However, the later tube had a developed length of 22-5/8" end-to-end.

THANKS JOE I didn't think so either. I have the early kind but the black plug is missing. My 70 454 with AC length is as you described. My VIN # is 7601

Mine was built on Feb 21, 1970, is an LS-5 with C60, and missing the black plug. Probalby pretty common. However, Long Island Corvette sells the plugs (red or black) if you hadn't found a suitable replacement. Here's the link:

THANKS I am sure mine is correct so I will buy the plug. Makes me wonder if some didn't have one. If it's not too much trouble could you measure yours & tell me what wording is on it? KEN

3 1970 cars...nice. One of my favorite years.

I imagine they did come with a plug, but after 40 years those puppies likely just fell out. Not much holding them in.

The overall length is 24 7/8", from the tip to the...boss? The knob that fits into the tube to secure it.

From the tip it reads: ADD | | FULL, with the line near ADD being 13/16" from the tip and the line near FULL being 1 5/8" from the tip. There is no cross-hatching or holes (later sticks often have these features).

There is a slight twist starting at about 8" and running to 11", from the tip.

            Hope it's helpful.

Based on the dimensions you mentioned, this dipstick sounds like the 2nd design 1970 Corvette big block dipstick. This dipstick has a red plug.

Thanks, Joe. Since my car is #4429, I'd imagine Ken's would also be second design.

And thanks for the info...red tip. I'd assumed black.

THANKS KENN Believe mine is like yours. Wording is for sure. I will measure to see if it is the same length. My VIN is 7601 so you are right about being the same as yours. Black tip Red tip maybe I should get one of each.
