    C1 Window Removal

    Hi all,

I am removing the door posts from a 1957 Corvette. To get them out, I have to remove all the stainless window trim, whiskers, etc. But to do that, I need to remove several screws that hold these items on. Problem is that the window is in the way, so it has to come out. There is a plastic gutter at the bottom of each window on the interior side that makes the assembly way too wide to get the window out with it on, so it almost seems like the bottom of the window would have to be fitted into its lower section while in the door.

So, can any of the hundreds of you out there who have done this give me instructions?

    Thanks,

    Bob

    Bob,

Do you have the ST-12? I just took my window out of my 62 and it explains it pretty well. Once the window is released from the sash it takes a little time to figure out exactly the right angle to get the window out. If you don't have one here is one online http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com...csg/index.html. You can also google you tube for a video. Hope this helps.

As Terry says, it will come out once you find the right angle(s) you can bring it up and out. However, if you have original parts, the rubber may be hard as a rock and you will have to break it in pieces to get it out. (My 57 was like this).

FYI, Rich Mozzetta has recently posted a very good and detailed procedure for rebuilding C1 doors. I suggest you search the archives for this, as some of the repro parts will not fit or work without modification.

        Hi all,

I have the ST-12 and my first window's gutter was hard as rock and it came out in multiple pieces. So, I won't worry about the second one!

        Thanks, for your help!

Yes Bob, they MUST be soft to get in or out. That's why most cars don't have them. My '59 has been gutter free since I bought it IIRC. When you go to reinstall the window assembly, the trickiest part is getting the forward roller into the forward channel inside the door. You'll see what I mean when you get to that point. It either slips right in in 10 seconds first try, or 20 minutes later! nature of "chaotic door assembly practices".

Not sure what you'r planning when the window comes out, but here are some details of the glass, sash and replacement reproduction gutters that may help, attached below. Also a fuzzy tutorial on window "fuzzies", and one for the rear window vertical channel felts.

            Rich,

Thanks for the great articles! I'm in the process of removing everything that needs to come off and out prior to soda blasting and painting my '57 "Lil Twister" drag race car, for which I'm still seeking documentation!

Bob, Glad if the docs could help.....

That's a great piece of Corvette history you have there. I'm going to email my friend, Jay Howell, some pictures I found online of your car. He may have some info. Jay raced in Michigan in the 60's. Jay is also friends with a period engine builder in MI then too, Denny Hummel, who may know something too.

Great article, pictures and explanations! Only wished I had read it "before" restoring the door and windows in my 57. Bill
