I am looking at page 418 in the 1965 AIM. I do not see a star washer at the accelerator lever for the ground strap. After witnessing several original cars and accelerator levers without star washers or witness marks from star washers I believe this to be true. Anyone else care to comment? Thanks, Joe

Joe. I know that Marco Hartner is helping put together the mechanical section for the new '65 JG. I won't speak for Marco, but you may want to get his insight. Best, TonyRegion VII Director (serving members in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas).

Re: 1965 Accelerator lever ground strap??
The '65 396 convertible that I restored and put through chapter, regional, and national flight judging this year was put back together without a star washer and no deductions were taken. The car never had a star washer to begin with, neither does my other '65 that has not been restored. Both cars are late build cars, one is 2209x (A.O. Smith) and 2216x (St. Louis) built.

James West

The accelerator lever is plated so it does not need the star washer to bite like the painted frame.- Top

Same here, Page. Both my unrestored '65s [Nov 6th L76 and Aug 2nd L78] show no marks that would indicate such a washer. Same with the lever I pulled off a 396 body in a junkyard in Spokane WA, in the early '90s.- Top

Underneath the left rear intake manifold bolt directly under the lever. The same bolt is holding the left side plug wire support.

Re: 1965 Accelerator lever ground strap??
It appears that your strap at the intake manifold bolt is on top of shield support bracket...was that the case in '65? I know in '67 there was a star washer at the accelerator lever and the manifold end was under the shield support against the manifold.Leif

Re: 1965 Accelerator lever ground strap??
Joe,
As you stated, the AIM does not list a star washer at the accelerator lever ground strap. While some cars were built with them, many had none. For some reason, the current JGs (not just '65) are calling for a star washer. The new '65 edition JG should be corrected. As others mentioned, a star washer was used, when a ground connection was made into a painted surface such as the frame, core support and headlight motor brackets.
Hope this helps,
Marco- Top

I thiink the 63 JM also states the star washer should be there,But a few here have already stated that is should not be there. How ever the some Judges are still deducting for missing star washers.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Ed, there's even a picture from the AIM in the JG that shows no star washer used there. Guess the Judges should learn what an AIM is and maybe look at some origianl cars?
