I can't help with your request, but what is the GM # of the water pump? Try plugging that into the search box, I think you may find your answer.

Richard,

I can't help with the "correct picture" for your application, but if you advance search this title , you will see all the backing plate types . If I recall from searching for my 66 , 66 is a pivotal year between the flat and the first ridged plates . Also between the slotted screw and the bolts.

Thank you for your reply Jim, my water pump has slotted screws but has a ridged plate water pump casting #3856284 cast K 8 5 Rich

RIchard if you search by just entering the number 3856284 you will get a lot of hits. I saw one picture of what the poster said was an NOS 385284 and it had bolts and the ridged backing plate. Another of one that had a late 65 date and it had pan head slotted screws with the ridged backing plate.

The 3856284 casting was used for all big block waterpumps from 1965-68 and for all short-leg applications for early 1969. The configuration of the assembled pumps changed in minor ways over the period.

Then I would say it is the correct backing plate for a late 65 .Of course the only correct plate for judging is whatever the JG says it should be ! Also advance search this title for photos
