I have both sleeves now and they are a much higher quality than is provided by an otherwise excellent vendor.

They are a pretty snug fit and I had to tap them in place. Does that sound correct? How much of the sleeve should stick out above the donut?

The GM extensions (sleeves) did not have to be tapped in. However, if they do need to be tapped in that's no problem, at all. They should work perfectly.

With the GM extensions, only a very small amount usually protruded above the packing (donut). However, more than this should also cause no problem, whatsoever. The portion above the packing adds nothing of functional value but it doesn't cause any functional problem, either.

These extensions serve the purpose of centering the pipe to heat riser as well as centering the packing (donut). Without them sometimes the heat riser valve will not open and close cleanly, it's very important to have these.

These extensions serve the purpose of centering the pipe to heat riser as well as centering the packing (donut).

They also reinforce the I.D. of the donut, preventing it from disintegrating inward from the clamping forces acting on the chamfered upper and lower surfaces.
