I don't think that's the case. Maximum steering angle is established by the steering stops riveted to the control arm that contact the knuckle at full lock, not the steering gear.
Modern replacement tires that are somewhat wider at the shoulder than OE tires will sometimes rub the frame, especially the steering gear carriage bolts on the LH side if the wheel is turned to full lock.
Since this only occurs at parking lot speeds, it's not a safety issue, but something to keep in mind. If you have to make a tight turn, turn the wheel to full lock, then back off about 1/8 turn.
