Can a brass ball valve from the hardware store be ok for a fuel shutoff valve. Are the seals ok with gas? Its a full 1/4 inch thru and I wonder if the smaller orifice would hinder the pump to keep up. I know these cars didnt originally have one but seems it could be really handy if anythink goes wrong with the pump. Thanks again!!

Re: 54 gas valve?
A brass ball valve will work fine. I've had one on my FI '60 for years. It sure comes in handy if one needs to change a fuel pump or disconnect the fuel line. It could also discourage some attempts at theft.... as long as you don't reveal it's on your car.

Re: 54 gas valve?
Typical hardward store valves are designed for water systems, and any elastomers they contain may be attacked by gasoline. See if you can find one in an auto parts catalog that specifically states compatiblilty with hydrocarbons.
If the hardware store part is all brass with no elastomers, then no problem.
