I am in need of a B28 (236-16) VAC.I have a 327/365 and have the wrong unit on it now.Does anyone have a reliable source to purchase an in spec.(4"hg.-8"hg.)unit.I am trying to solve a overheating problem and a correctly functioning unit is a must. Thanks Doug

      Hey Doug,

I recently saw one in an ad over on the corvette forum.

Airtex / Wells #4v1053 at rockauto.com for about $5. Local parts store near you probably has one also.

I saved a CF post by John Hinckley which had the following cross-reference numbers:
        GM #88924985
        AC-Delco #D1312C
        Airtex #4V1053
        BWD #V329
        Standard #VC-177
        Wells #DV1810
        Niehoff #DR-305

I suspect like some parts today, that there may be a lot of re-branding of the exact same commonly manufactured part.

Doug I made a note from reading a post that AIRTEX 4V1053 is the B28. I have a B28 that I bought at my local NAPA, it is in a NAPA ECHLIN marked box and is a VC1810. Do not know if it is still available at NAPA.

Thanks to everyone, has anyone tested the ones they have bought for accuracy? Doug

Yes, I bought the airtex 4V1053 from Rock Auto (marked B28) and it tested on spec (4"-8") with a Mighty-Vac.

You have to be very careful when buying a "reproduction" MS 236-16 VAC. Many have the correct OE GM numbers, but are really "B1" VACs that don't provide full advance until about 19". These don't even meet the Two-Inch-Rule for a base engine with manual transmission. They are boat anchors!

It's best to buy a B28, all of which are made by Standard Motor Products... or at least they used to because they appear to be getting hard to find.

Post #4 has the part numbers for some available brands, but the part inside the box, as long as it's stamped B28, is the same SMP-manufactured part regardless of the name on the box.

Here's a thread where someone found a B28 in the Airtex brand:

Before installing I recommend testing the VAC with a Mighty Vac to verify that it's reasonably in spec, and once on the engine it should be tested to verify that the maximum advance is within spec. Figure within +/- one inch Hg and a degree or two of published nominal specs.

                    www.rockauto.com Part # 4v1053 price $5.15. I bought 2 in Nov 2013. I checked it with a mighty-vac also. It was on spec.

I have one on my '64 L76, runs like a scalded dog and never heats either.
