Thought I'd start a new thread as a follow-up to Gary's question from earlier this morning. I knew I had something at the bottom of my tire file that explained the coding. It is a sheet from a retail tire catalog that dates back to probably about the mid-seventies - page 55, yellow paper, about 8.5" by 5.5" sheet size. I should have written down the vendor and
date, but didn't. I believe it might be a Dav-Mac catalog, and I don't think they are in business anymore.
In any event, it gives an example and says this coding method applies to all tires manufacturered for sale in the US after May 21, 1971.
MAL9ABC032
MA - Manufacturer and plant code
L9 - Tire size code
ABC - Group of symbols optional with the manufacturer.
032 - date code, week (1-52) and last digit of the year.
I believe this coding system is still current, except, beginning circa 2000 the date code is four digits, the last two being the last two digits of the year so the decade is indentified.
As far as trying to find out the specfics of the coding beyond the date code,I have no idea where to start, except to try to find someone at the manufactuer knowledgeable to intrepret the plant, size, and optional codes.
