    C2 inner fender seals

I'm ready to install some new inner fender dust seals that go between the top of the inner fender and the underside of the upper surround on my '66. There is a front and rear seal on both sides. Were these seals trimmed at the apex of the inner fender (where it forms a point) so that the material didn't "bunch up" or were they installed as one continuous piece? Neither the AIM nor the archives provides any clarification.

They are one continuous piece stapled onto the innerfender. The interesting thing is that there are little ridges on the rubber, and they are assembled either with the ridges to the inside of the wheel well or to the outside, but not one in and one out. There can be as few as 6 staples up to 14 or so, most having 7-9 staples.

Was there a special tool used to install the staples? I purchased reproduction staples some time ago and am unclear as to the actual installation.

Wayne, thanks for the info, I also didn't know about the orientation of the ridges on the front and rear seals. I guess someone had a sense of symmetry on the manufacturing line.

The staples were installed by a machine that had a spring steel wire spool, that cut and bent and crimped the staple all at the same time. The operator most likely had a foot pedal or something like that to activate it. He would stand holding the innerfender over the die, or anvil part with the other end hanging below. This means that all staples are from outside with an inside the wheel well crimp. They didnt really give a rat`s about symetry actually. The roll of rubber was hanging there and thats the way it came off the roll. So one or the other ribbed or not was always out. I have seen all out or all in depending on how the roll was mounted. The amount of staples depended on the operator.

Are you saying the staples are crimped on the engine compartment side. Many of the cars at shows have the flat staple on the engine side and the crimped staple inside the wheel wheel. Which way is correct??

No, I said that they were crimped on the wheel well side.
