    Ignition Shielding for '71 LS5

My ignition shielding needs to be rechromed from my '71 LS5. How can you rechrome the part and still retain the original look with the plastic rivets? Can the rivets be reinstalled after removal? How is this handled?

    Thanks.

I had to repair one once....

I'm not sure of the *proper* procedure, but I accidentally snapped one of my original plastic rivets out of my original '70 lid one day while trying to polish off some of the corrosion on the inside of the ignition shielding. I found the top (only after considerable time spent examining the garage floor on my hands and knees) and epoxied it back to the other half of the plastic rivet. It's been a while (and the garage is too damn cold to go look inside now) but I think there was a little washer in there too on the outside of the plastic piece. So far so good in terms of it holding together... its been almost a year and 4000 miles since I repaired it. I think though that the '71 shielding is different from the early '70 shielding so you might have different rivet / washer / plastic liner setup than I did. If I recall correctly that all changed around S/N 12000 in 1970 when they went to the dual snorkel closed element air filter. ~Juliet

I don't think you can remove and replace the rivets without causing some problems. Those pieces are available in nice condition(with original flash chrome) from Corvette parts vendors or at swap meets. I think that would be the best route to take
